If your resume has not gotten you an interview in over a month, then it’s time for a renewal. Either start from scratch or reread your resume using Ayesha Writes 4 You’s Resume Rewrite Checklist.
Go through each question on the checklist. If anything needs to be corrected, make sure you correct it prior to sending it out.
- Did you proofread your work, i.e. did you correct all spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors?
- Is your resume outdated? Are you still using objectives? Do you have a summary of qualifications?
- Is your format current and eye-catching?
- Will your employer have to search for the important stuff or have you posted your most relevant accomplishments on the top 1/3 of your resume?
- Is your contact information correct?
- Is your work history simply a list of job descriptions or concrete, task-based accomplishments?
- Does your resume highlight important skills needed for the job you’re applying or is it jut a smorgasbord of information?
- Is your font 10 -12 pt. and serif?
- Do you have an ASCII (or Internet) form of your resume to send on job boards and post inside e-mails?
- Have you made the best usage of bold, italics, underlining, and sectioning to make your resume stand out?
- Does your resume have all the keywords necessary to make your resume pass through Internet scans?
- Are there any employment gaps that need to be explained?
- Is your job history listed chronologically?
- Is each bullet unique and different from other bullets posted throughout your resume?
All of these questions should be gone through thoroughly to ensure that your resume is making the best impression possible.
Please remember that if you go through your resume and answer yes to every question, but have been searching for over a month, then there may be something missing that you’re not seeing. It may be time to hire a professional. Sometimes, even when you think you are doing the right thing, it takes an insider to find those one or two things that can really tweak your resume and make it the personal marketing tool necessary to help you “Step Up to a Better Career“.
As always, good luck with your job search.
Sincerely,
Ayesha Long

When talking to people in danger of being laid-off, I advise them to be proactive towards their job search. The number one rebuttal? There aren’t any jobs out there!
Is that true? Of course not!
Did these people check job boards to see if there are any postings in their particular field or industry? Of course not!
Have they asked around and spoken to friends to see if their company has any openings? Of course not!
Many people have taken the news media’s fear advertising and internalized the concept that because the economy is in a slump, people are getting laid-off and there are absolutely no jobs out there.
Well, the truth is, while many people are getting laid-off, companies are looking for newer faces at the same time. Ironic, but true.
So before you decide you might as well wait and see what the company does, look around. Go to websites specific to your industry, call your company’s competitors and collaborators – but do your research!
As always, good luck on your job search.

If you are serious about job searching, it should be your number one priority. In other words, don’t spend the first few months of your unemployment as a mini retirement. With so many businesses closing, you should be looking for a job as soon as possible. You don’t want to be just another crab in the barrel. You want to be the one rare treasure that employers know about, while everyone else is vacationing.
This gives you a head-start above the competition. Also, knowing that you are receiving unemployment, you have an entire six months to search for a job that suits you as opposed to settling with any job just because you need the money.
As always, be proactive and good luck on your job search.
