Resume Rewrite

Posted by ayeshawrites4u on February 12, 2009

If your resume has not gotten you an interview in over a month, then it’s time for a renewal.  Either start from scratch or reread your resume using Ayesha Writes 4 You’s Resume Rewrite Checklist.

Go through each question on the checklist.  If anything needs to be corrected, make sure you correct it prior to sending it out.

  1. Did you proofread your work, i.e. did you correct all spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors?
  2. Is your resume outdated? Are you still using objectives? Do you have a summary of qualifications?
  3. Is your format current and eye-catching?
  4. Will your employer have to search for the important stuff or have you posted your most relevant accomplishments on the top 1/3 of your resume?
  5. Is your contact information correct?
  6. Is your work history simply a list of job descriptions or concrete, task-based accomplishments?
  7. Does your resume highlight important skills needed for the job you’re applying or is it jut a smorgasbord of information?
  8. Is your font 10 -12 pt. and serif?
  9. Do you have an ASCII (or Internet) form of your resume to send on job boards and post inside e-mails?
  10. Have you made the best usage of bold, italics, underlining, and sectioning to make your resume stand out?
  11. Does your resume have all the keywords necessary to make your resume pass through Internet scans?
  12. Are there any employment gaps that need to be explained?
  13. Is your job history listed chronologically?
  14. Is each bullet unique and different from other bullets posted throughout your resume?

All of these questions should be gone through thoroughly to ensure that your resume is making the best impression possible.

Please remember that if you go through your resume and answer yes to every question, but have been searching for over a month, then there may be something missing that you’re not seeing.  It may be time to hire a professional.  Sometimes, even when you think you are doing the right thing, it takes an insider to find those one or two things that can really tweak your resume and make it the personal marketing tool necessary to help you “Step Up to a Better Career“.

As always, good luck with your job search.

Sincerely,

Ayesha Long
